The morality of the atomic bomb was one of the main reason why the atomic bomb wasn't justified. Effects of the bombing were immediate and severely impacted on civilians, mentally and physically. Civilians were injured from the burnings and the overexposure to radiation. Radiation caused genetic mutations and new diseases were emerged. Women whom were pregnant not only were exposed by the radiation by the bomb, but their unborn child as well. The radiation caused genetic mutations on future generations. Several survivors of the bombing had cancer and other diseases eight years after the bombing. Buildings were completely in ruins and shambles when the bomb dropped. Personal accounts showed the discomforts of having people stare and look at the scars on the victim's faces. The effects of the two bombings were devastating.
In one of the videos shown in class, the act of dropping the atomic bomb was justified due to the atrocious acts Japanese soldiers have committed and that the atomic bomb officially ended the war. However, the atomic bomb was only part of Japan's excuse to surrender, and the main purpose for Japan to surrender was to prevent Russia from invading Korea and Manchuria. Before the bombing, Japan was considering surrendering and wanted to negotiate terms with the Allies. However, the US was the one that didn't agree with Japan to keep their emperor. The disagreement caused the negotiations for surrender to fail. It wasn't completely Japan's fault for not surrendering to the Allies.
Although the public opinion of the atomic bomb was mainly positive and felt that it was justified, the President of the United States, Truman, was racist which influences the public opinion. Truman called the Japanese "yellow cockroaches" and other demeaning names towards Japanese. However, the atrocities in Japan's prison camps were committed by the soldiers, not the civilians. By launching an atomic bomb on two cities with innocent civilians does not justify anything. Most of the victims had done no harm in the war. Despite the crimes such as the harsh treatments in the Japanese prison camps and the beatings of prisoners, President Truman also issued all Japanese-Americans to be in concentration camps with horrible conditions as well. Innocent people were scarred and harmed without a reason. The atomic remained unjustified due to the hypocrisy.
Overall, due to the immorality, negative impacts, and the fact that Japan was ready to surrender, the drops of the atomic bombs were not justified. The impacts of the war scarred people mentally and physically. Although several stated that the atomic bomb was the reason why Japan surrendered, it was only part of the reason. With the USSR invading Manchuria, Korea, and Hokkaido, Japan surrendered to prevent USSR's advances. Also Japan had intentions to surrender, which is why the atomic bomb was not justified.
