Dear all,
We right now are blooming in economy. Our country has sprouted out new roads, railways, mechanics, and most importantly, factories. These factories produce our goods, products, and machines, without them our economy would crumble. Recently, there has been violent protests and revolutions about the working conditions and treatments of the workers. Although people do wish to have a free trade without the government interfering with business, we must also think of our people and the country. Without these workers, our factories can not function. If our factories stopped working, then our economy would start falling. Right now it would be hard to resume back into the agricultural lifestyle, due to the most of our lands are now covered with factories and roads. I would also like the parliament to consider three proposals that may improve working conditions, treatments toward workers, and child labor.
My first proposal is to improve the working conditions in the factories. According to a man, interviewed in 1849 who had worked in a mill as a child, several workers, including children, are required to wake up early in the morning in order to get to work. However, they would then work nonstop till night. On weekends, they would work even later and were also asked to help clean machines. When cleaning the machines, there may be safety hazards during the process. To address and solve this issue, I propose that work hours should have the maximum of eight hours. In a interview of Samuel Coulson, 4 July, 1832, it was stated that even children are working for 19 hours. Having such tired workers in factories wouldn’t be helpful at all, since more accidents are likely to occur and work wouldn’t be done as efficiently if all workers are tired. In the proposed eight hour labour time, it would also include the time for rests and meals.
My second proposal is to ask the parliament to address the treatments towards the workers. According to an unknown woman who worked in a cotton factory as a child in 1849, she has seen people being beaten by their boss to the point where they died. This is murder! These actions are why some workers would be going on strikes and revolutions in the factory. Some were even abused till some had gone mad. People moderating the workers would cut their hair too if they disobeyed them. We should also send in some officials to check up on working conditions of the laborers and set up a standard for the factory owners to qualify. In 1828, newspaper “The Lion” reported on a worker, John Brown about how he was treated at his job. He stated that overlookers used to beat me with pieces of thick leather straps made supple by oil, and having an iron buckle at the end, drew blood almost every time it was applied. These workers are like being treated as slaves. We should put a stop to this.
The second proposal would be improving on the decrease of child labor. Ever since factories opened up, children work alongside their parents. However, these working places do not ensure any safety measures. Children are also more likely to be doing the dangerous work, due to their small and agile body. In 1832, Charles Aberdeen worked in a Manchester cotton factory and wrote,”The smallest child in the factories were scavengers……they go under the machine, while it is going……….it is very dangerous when they first come, but they become used to it." These children are sacrificed to do these jobs without any safety measures. To solve this problem, I propose that we give the children insurance and more safety equipments. We do not want to limit the children not being able to work at factories, due to understanding the need of money to support their house.
I believe that these three proposals may help reduce the revolutions, violent protests, and strikes. Although it may not seem much, but this may satisfy a part of what they want. If these violent acts keep on going without being addressed, our economy would be affected greatly. They may be affected due to less employments in several factories, which means less products being made and sold. These violent acts may also disturb the factory’s surrounding. Machines that are being destroyed affects the work significantly and are also costly. Our economy is depending on these workers like our country depending on our subject, which is why we should imply these three proposals that improve on working conditions, treatments toward workers, and child labor. Thank you all.
